Sienna sighs and drops into the nearest chair. We all watch in silence as she pours herself a large glass of red.

‘I was lying on my back watching the stars behind some bushes. I wanted privacy because I’d been sick and was worried I was going to do it again all over Lizzie’s parents’ nice floor. Then you guys moved back a little closer to my secret spot and I couldn’t leave. So I sat there and listened while you talked. Then… after I heard what you guys said, I had to take a look at you both, to see if what I was hearing was real.’ Sienna shrugs and nods at the photo. ‘I saw this exact moment, and it was actually so beautiful I had to take a picture. But after what happened… not long after this was taken, I made a point to never show anyone. Because I didn’t want to cause any trouble. I still don’t.’

‘So are you saying you didn’t print this out and leave it for me to find?’ I ask.

Lance makes a sound in his throat when Sienna shakes her head emphatically.

‘What?’ Sienna sits forward in her seat and glares at Lance. I’ve never seen her so riled before. ‘Do you have a problem with me?’

Lance makes a face at Sienna and shakes his head. ‘Why would I? I don’t even know you.’

When his gaze rests on the picture of Sam and me, a sneer forms on his lips. ‘I guess this photo explains a lot.’ Lance finally meets my gaze, his hazel eyes glowing with hostility. ‘So this guy’s the reason why you can’t even form a proper connection with me, and from your reaction to seeing his face again, it’s pretty obvious you still hold a candle for him.’

‘Don’t be ridiculous.’

Lance’s hands, which are resting against the tabletop, make fists. Sometimes he gets like this when he’s drunk. Ridiculously jealous. He once kept me up all night, ranting and raving about how I’ve built walls around my heart, all because I refused to tell him the name of the first person I ever fell in love with.

‘Where is he now? Why didn’t he come this weekend?’ Lance laughs. It’s not a pleasant sound. ‘He’s lucky that he’s not here, because if he were, I’d punch his fucking face in.’

I’m about to go mental at Lance and tell him to shut up and that his ego can go to hell, but Tamara clears her throat and leans across the table, her eyes blazing at Lance.

‘You can’t punch him in the face, dickhead. Unless you have a time travel machine.’ Tamara shakes her head as her eyes film over with tears. ‘He’s dead. Samuel died ten years ago.’ She wipes a tear from her cheek and looks at me before she shakes her head and storms off.

Lizzie gets up and disappears into the kitchen only to return with a bottle of gin. ‘I think we all need a stiff drink.’ She pours me one and slides it my way.
